I was having this problem with a few emails just like alot of other
people and it’s weird because I’m sure google is aware of it.
It bother some but not all. If the Gmail vacation responder isn’t
replying to emails people send:
First check to make sure is on and make sure you have auto respond to
only contact list off (that’s ofcourse if you want it off – atleast for
now)
Turn Gmail Vacation responder off and click save.
Go back to the setting page for the responder and start typing in the
subject field without turning it back on. It will automatically fill the
“on” check box once you start typing, finish your subject and finish the
message body and click save. Wha la! lol 
that’s it. It works everytime. Try sending another mail and see if it
works, give it some times b/c gmail and others and sometime really slow
to process mails, i have fixing these they take too much time to test
them (mails). For me Gmail took about 10-12min to auto reply and also I
noticed then other older mails started responding like mails send from
before it got working right.
One more thing if you try it once and it doesn’t work still just do it
one more time, Gmail and Google apps I’ve noticed sometimes you’ve got
to do things twice and the second times the charm.
